As fuel cell technologies move from pilot projects to global deployment, filtration performance becomes a critical enabler of reliability, efficiency, and scale. At the CFSS 2026 Opening Ceremony, the World Filtration Institute is honored to feature Mr. Martin Klein, Senior Vice President of Engineering for Filter Elements and Filtration Materials at MANN+HUMMEL, presenting:
“From Lab to Road: Cathode Air Filters Built for Global Fuel Cell Scale-Up.”
Fuel cells are moving from pilot projects to real-world fleets—and clean cathode air is a key enabler of performance and durability. In this talk, Martin Klein (SVP Engineering Filtration Materials, MANN+HUMMEL) explains why airborne particles and trace gases such as SO₂, NH₃ and NOₓ can degrade fuel cell systems, and how cathode air filters combining particle filtration with tailored adsorption layers help protect the stack.
The presentation connects lab testing and field reality: results from field-used filters show reduced remaining SO₂ adsorption capacity compared to unused parts, and controlled bench tests demonstrate how higher SO₂ concentrations drive faster breakthrough. Finally, it introduces an in situ monitoring setup to measure real ambient gas loads (before/after filtration), temperature and humidity—building the data foundation to right-size adsorbents for cost-effective, scalable cathode air filtration for global fuel cell roll-out.
